Emile mentioned Isabel a few times in this new interview with Vanity Fair about the Mt Kilimanjaro climb. The mentions of Isabel are below, and you can read the full interview with him here.

Mike Ryan: After the initial adrenaline rush of the idea of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro wore off, was there ever a moment in the weeks leading up where you thought, “Holy shit, I actually have to climb Mount Kilimanjaro”?

Emile Hirsch: Yeah. The way I got involved is that I was friends with Isabel Lucas, and I called her when she was working on a movie in Michigan. She told me all about this climb. I said, “Wow, that sounds amazing.” Isabel’s very sweet: she didn’t make climbing Kilimanjaro sound very scary or hard. And I didn’t actually know that much about Kilimanjaro up to that point. So it sounded like this almost glorified hippie hike. It could have been a hill to me for all I knew at that exact moment.

So Kenna called me and talked to me about it. I had a series of conversations with him. Each time I asked him more about it, is started to sound like a much harder endeavor. When I found out it is 19,340 feet and that Mount McKinley was just a couple of hundred feet higher, that really blew my mind. I’d seen Mount McKinley when I was in Alaska shooting Into the Wild. You could see McKinley from about 100 miles away, and it was huge. And I always wanted to climb McKinley. We’d be going to set and I’d be looking at it, wanting to run over there and climb it. This was an opportunity to make up for missing out on McKinley.

In doing research for this interview, I spoke to a friend who climbed Kilimanjaro a couple of years ago. I now know the definition of “scree” [broken rock fragments on mountain cliffs]…

Yeah! I “screed” all the way down. Once I actually got to the summit, I had this realization that I was running pretty low on water because I had given Isabel a good amount of my water—she was really in bad shape and really thirsty and had already finished all of hers. She ended up drinking quite a bit of it. So I had a near empty water supply and realizing I had about four miles of really, really steep terrain and scree. And I had to just kind of scree down the mountain really fast. It became fun, it became like skiing.

In 2005, Kenna — who had long heard stories of the majesty and mystery of Mt. Kilimanjaro from his father — decided to climb the peak. He made it to Kosovo Camp, a clearing located some 16,000 feet above sea level (and still 3,000 feet from the summit), and then pushed onward toward the top of the mountain. He didn’t make it.

Five years later, he decided to make the trek again, this time in the hope of calling attention to the global clean-water crisis. Both the trip and the cause were personal to Kenna, because when his father was a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and friends to water-borne diseases and, as he put it, “I could have been one of those kids.”

So, in January, with a crew of nearly 300 backing him up — including fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, plus a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and skilled guides — he headed back up the mountain. (His friend Justin Timberlake intended to join the trek but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts; Justin introduces the film.) And their trip is documented in “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” a 90-minute film that premieres Sunday (March 14) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

And apart from detailing the group’s massive scaling of Africa’s tallest mountain, the film also contains a symbolic message, one that applies not just to the trek, but to tackling seemingly insurmountable issues like global clean water: that together, we can accomplish great things.

“Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro” doesn’t premiere on MTV until Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, but you can get a sneak peek of the documentary, which follows Kenna and his team’s treacherous trek up Africa’s highest mountain, right now.

In February, Kenna, along with fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, and a team of scientists and experienced mountain guides, climbed to the peak of Kilimanjaro — some 19,000 feet above sea level — with the goal of raising awareness about the global clean-water crisis. It’s an epidemic that hits close to home for the Ethiopian-born artist.

“When I was younger, my dad pointed out Kilimanjaro on a huge atlas. It stood in my mind as one of the wonders of the world,” he said. “This climb is dedicated to my father. As a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and lost his friends and family to water-borne diseases. A billion people in the world don’t have clean water. I had to do something about it. For me it’s personal. I could have been one of those kids. I needed to come up with something that would command attention. And the only thing I could think of that was that massive was climbing Kilimanjaro.”

MTV released the first trailer for its upcoming documentary on the recent celeb-stacked Kilimanjaro climb that raised awareness about the need for clean drinking water in impoverished parts of the world. One thing is clear after watching the footage. This was no cakewalk.

Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Emile Hirsch, Isabel Lucas and other celebs all appear as if they’ve been pushed near the breaking point as they trudge up the side of the imposing mountain with a climbing party of roughly 300 people. Headaches, scrapes, bruises and exhaustion all look par for the course for the climbers. MTV plans to air the entire documentary March 14.

Ethiopian-born musician Kenna organized the climb after learning that his father had suffered from water-borne illnesses throughout much of his childhood, and many Ethiopians still travel long distances to secure clean drinking water. Kenna conceived of the socially-conscious Summit on the Summit after failing to climb the formidable mountain in 2007.

The announcement is work of Melbourne advertising agency Starship who approached Sea Shepherd with the concept for the awareness campaign.

Starship’s Managing Director Geoffrey McDonald Bowll said his team felt compelled to support Sea Shepherd’s work protecting the oceans.

Starship wanted to design, build and promote a PSA for Sea Shepherd to raise much needed funds to shut down whaling in Australia’s Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, said Geoffrey.

A huge CONGRATULATIONS goes to Isabel and the Summit On The Summit team who today reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, in their quest to raise awareness of the global water crisis! They reached the massive height of 19,340ft.

Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas trudged through a blizzard Monday on the fifth day of their hike with other entertainers and activists up 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro.

“It’s pretty gnarly,” Elizabeth Gore, an executive with the United Nations Foundation, and one of the participants of the trek to raise awareness of global water issues, tells PEOPLE by satellite phone. “The visibility is only 10 feet in front of you. And it’s cold. I’ve got six layers on.”

With just a day left of climbing before hitting the summit of the Tanzanian mountain, the group reached 16,000 feet, causing many to experience headaches and stomach problems due to the high altitude.

“We’re on the hardest route at the fastest pace, but no one has turned back,” she says. “It’s pretty kick ass that all of the climbers have made it all the way. We’re all trying to help each other get to the top.”

Isabel has progressed another 2,000ft in the last 24 hours, and is now at an impressive 16,175ft on her climb up Mt Kili!

Izzy is now at 14,866ft on her Mt Kilimanjaro climb! Her fellow climbers are at similar levels, with some being just above 14,900ft. They’re now two days away from the summit – how incredible is that?!
