Hanan Townshend Scoring Terrence Malick’s ‘Knight of Cups’
knight-of-cupsHanan Townshend is reuniting with director Terrence Malick on the upcoming drama Knight of Cups. The film is also written by Malick and stars Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Joel Kinnaman, Teresa Palmer, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Nick Offerman, Isabel Lucas, Antonio Banderas, Jason Clarke and Freida Pinto. Recent reports indicate that not all listed actors will make the final cut of the movie. No specific plot details have been revealed yet. Sarah Green (The Tree of Life, Take Shelter, Mud) is producing the project with Nicolas Gonda (The Tree of Life, The New World). Townshend has previously scored Malick’s last feature To the Wonder. He is the first composer to collaborate with Malick more than once. The director has also worked with such composers as Ennio Morricone (Days of Heaven), Hans Zimmer (The Thin Red Line), James Horner (The New World) and Alexandre Desplat (The Tree of Life). Knight of Cups is expected to premiere in 2014.
Townshend is also contributing music to the upcoming drama The Better Angels. The film, which was originally entitled The Green Blade Rises is directed by AJ Edwards, Malick’s editor on his last couple of features, and stars Wes Bentley, Brit Marling, Diane Kruger and Jason Clarke. The movie centers on Abraham Lincoln’s formative years, including abandonment by his father in the harsh winter wilderness. Malick is producing the project with Nicolas Gonda and Charley Beil (To The Wonder). Zbigniew Preisner has originally been announced as the composer of the film. The Better Angels is also expected to premiere next year.
A couple of months ago, Isabel spoke to The West Australian to promote Linneys. She also chatted about Knight Of Cups, and teased us about a new project she is working on! Read the full interview on our press page through the link below…
Isabel Lucas honours the Kimberley
She may be working with Hollywood hot shots Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett but Aussie actress, environmental activist and the face of luxury WA jewellery label Linneys, Isabel Lucas, is keeping her feet firmly on the ground.
The 28-year-old co-stars with the Oscar-winning trio in Knight of Cups, one of the most eagerly awaited cinematic releases of 2014 from acclaimed American auteur Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, To the Wonder).
The tightly guarded film is said to be about a man, temptations, celebrity and excess and shot in an improvised style, without a script.
“Terrence is a man of such integrity and an incredible artist . . . it was such a magical experience and I am so grateful,” the softly spoken, Los Angeles-based Lucas gushes modestly to AAA Weekend.
“And Christian taught me so much and was very generous with me. Cate seems like such a guiding light and so conscious in so many ways . . . I really admire her. And Natalie (also starring in Thor: The Dark World opposite Lucas’ former lover Chris Hemsworth) was so lovely, really kind and sweet.”
As for her burgeoning film career, Lucas is surging ahead with three other US films due for release next year – including a thriller alongside *Nick Jonas *- and an Australian production that has her tight-lipped on the details.
“I can say I’m filming the movie in December in Sydney and I’m really excited but I’m not allowed to say what it is just yet,” she says.

Isabel news is slow again, so while I was checking for any news on Knight Of Cups I came across some interviews with a couple of the cast members plus a film editor who previously worked with director Terrence Malick which I thought I’d post here. They give a bit of insight into what the film might be about. As for a release date for the film, it will probably be 2014 now.
Jason Clarke interview with IndieWire:
And what was “Knight of Cups” like?
It was just hilarious! Well Terry is a guy where you get 20 pages of dialogue, this extraordinarily in-depth dialogue, and then you’ll learn it and try and shoot it. But Terry’s not after anything that’s ordained or set up. He’s creating an environment where he just wants to capture something that’s alive.
Are you in it enough that you can’t be cut out of it?
You never know with Terrence Malick. I remember when I told Jess, she said, “Just so you know, you might not end up in the film.” There were so many people coming in and out and he’s out there doing his thing. There’s a craziness and a wonderfulness and a freedom but he’s got great motives and aspirations. He’s interested in pursuing things.
Teresa Palmer interview with IndieWire
Last week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Palmer about ‘Wish’ but of course, had to inquire about her work on Malick’s film. And what started as a schedule that wasn’t supposed to last longer than a day, turned into something much more, with Palmer being utilized to shake up the story and characters in the film.
“I was only supposed to be there for one morning and…they call it ‘torpedo’ when a character in a cast comes and gets thrown into the scene and the other actor doesn’t know that character is going to be put in the scene. That’s just the little experiment they do,” Palmer explained. “So the end of when I was supposed to go home, Terence asked me, ‘What are you doing the rest of the day?’ I was like ‘Nothing, nothing at all.’ And then he was like, ‘Would you like to stay and we’ll make you a torpedo.’ So I ended up torpedoing into these scenes with Christian Bale and then that continued on for the next eight days. So I was brought back and this character became a bigger character and I got to improvise and it was just a funny, sassy character that’s different from a lot of the other characters that I’ve seen in some of Terry’s past films.”
Screen Daily talked to Terrence Malick’s producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda a couple of months ago, and they offered some new plot details on Knight Of Cups.
Our filmography page for the film has also been updated.
SG: We recently finished shooting Knight of Cups, which is about the LA movie business. Our untitled film, the one set against the music scene in Texas, will begin shooting in a few weeks. It was called Lawless but we agreed to give that name to John Hillcoat.
Christian Bale ia a lead in Knight of Cups and has a supporting role in the untitled film, and both are set in the contemporary world. We’ll edit them simultaneously and FilmNation is on board both. We consider FilmNation partners on all of Terry’s films going forward.
Check out this fantastic new interview with Izzy from the Cairns Post today! In it she talks about Cairns, Sea Shepherd, her agent Sharron Meissner, and – most excitingly of all – her experience on Knight Of Cups. I don’t know about you, but I’ve missed hearing from Isabel, so I really enjoyed reading this!
You can also find it in our Press section now too.
Acting out for the environment
She may be one of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars, but Isabel Lucas remains true to her Cairns roots with her environmental passions.
She’s just wrapped up filming alongside Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett, but Isabel’s mind is hardly on Hollywood.
Rather, it’s on the Coral Sea, and the Kimberley in northwest Australia, and off the coast of California… in fact, anywhere the environment is under threat.
The experience of filming alongside three Oscar winners and under the guidance of a director she idolises is barely enough to distract the former Cairns schoolgirl from a passion equal to acting.
While her stomping ground is a far cry from her home in Los Angeles, a move that has helped fill her resume with feature films Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Immortals, The Pacific and Daybreakers, the plight of the Far North’s marine environment remains a priority.
“I feel we are so lucky to experience living in such a beautiful part of the world,” Isabel says of Cairns.
New candids of Izzy strolling through New York last weekend have been added to our Gallery. She was in the city to attend New York Fashion Week.
Several other sets of new candids, plus new photos from the set of Knight Of Cups, have also been added in the last couple of weeks. Browse through our Candids and Films gallery sections to find them … they’re definitely worth a browse
For the first of several movie updates coming today, I have added some gorgeous new photos of Isabel on the set of Knight Of Cups in Santa Monica earlier this week. She is looking beautiful as always, wearing a long green floral dress, and filming another scene with Christian Bale. We also have our first shot of Isabel with director Terrence Malick! I’m so excited for this film
Since I last posted an update here, the gallery has been updated with new photos from the set of Knight Of Cups, and two new sets of candids! Izzy was snapped out and about in Hollywood with friends during her time off from the film.
I’m now in the process of adding a few additional shots from some 2009 appearances, which you will be able to find here.
A recent article about Knight Of Cups on the LA Times talks about the filming of a scene in a club, and provides a few more details on the basic plot of the film. When I say ‘more’, I don’t mean by much … the new description is almost as vague as the previous one (which was ‘a man searching for love and truth’)!
It was as trippy as it sounds. Malick was a lone cameraman with only a lighting assistant by his side. Our brother blog Movies Now tells us the film in question, “Knight of Cups,” follows a man reflecting on a series of relationships with beautiful women.
Read the full article, with more on the filming of this scene – but nothing about Isabel – here.
Izzy was once again snapped on the set of Knight Of Cups earlier this week, this time filming a scene at a window. Wes Bentley, Christian Bale and director Terrence Malick were also photographed at the window working on the scene, although not with Isabel.
Pictures have been added to our Gallery…
I’m very happy to have found lots more HQ photos from yesterday’s filming of Knight Of Cups for you! Most of the photos I added yesterday have also been replaced with HQ. These additional photos give us a better look at how much fun Izzy seemed to be having splashing around in the water, and we also see more of her and Christian Bale, as well as Wes Bentley joining them. I just love all these photos of her with a big smile on her face, she looks so pretty!
EDIT: The woman Isabel is playing around with in the sea is in fact fellow Aussie actress Teresa Palmer!
Izzy is still working on Knight Of Cups in Los Angeles, and was today snapped filming another scene in/around the city. When I first saw these photos I couldn’t help but be reminded of Isabel as Tasha in Home & Away – she looks so much like her again here, with the blonde hair, cute little smile and hippy style clothes … not to mention the beach. And she looks fantastic! It seems like she is having a great time, and I particularly love this photo with Christian Bale. Have a peek at the pics in our Gallery, lovely Isabel fans …
