The Waiting City received it’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this week, and with it came some new material from the film. You can see the first poster from the film to your left, and a few posts down is the first review. There is no official site for the movie yet, but the film is featured on the distribution company’s website, H20 Motion Pictures, and you can also watch the trailer there.

Finally, you can see some photos of director Claire McCarthy and star Radha Mitchell at the premiere at TorontoLife.com. Isabel unfortunately did not attend the event.

The journey looks like an overly familiar one as “The Waiting City” begins. Westerners confronting, then being rejuvenated by the mysterious East is by now a cliche. Yet Sydney-based writer-director Claire McCarthy proves too smart to fall into that trap. She appreciates and, even better, understands the power Indian spiritualism can have on foreigners, and so has made a persuasive, intimate account of a couple’s encounter with the subcontinent.

By this description alone, you understand this is no “Monsoon Wedding” or even “City of Joy.” While the film’s grip on a viewer dramatically increases as the story moves deeper and deeper into an experience that exposes a couple’s troubled relationship, McCarthy makes no concessions to commercial considerations. The film is solely designed for festivals and art venues but word of mouth should help “The Waiting City” reach a receptive audience.

Radha Mitchell and Joel Edgerton play a 30-something Australian couple, who comes to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) to claim an adopted daughter, Lakshmi. Red tape delays things so they are forced to wait in this exotic and often trying city.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a very, very busy man. Having shot the thriller The Resident earlier this year, Dean Morgan moved immediately into production of the DC/Vertigo comic book adaptation The Losers, currently shooting in Puerto Rico. Now word comes from the actor himself that he’ll be taking a role in the upcoming remake of the 1984 John Milius cult classic, Red Dawn.

“I’m jumping back in,” Dean Morgan reveals to ComingSoon.net, ” I go to work on something about ten days after I’ve finished shooting ['The Losers']… It’s a remake of a movie that I love… ‘Red Dawn.’ I just love that f**king movie, ever since I was a kid.”

Red Dawn, slated to start shooting soon in Detroit, MI, takes place in an alternate reality where the United States has fallen to the forces of communism and focuses on a group of high school students who form a militant band to fight back.

“I guess I’m more or less the old Powers Booth character,” says Dean Morgan of his role, “There’s all the kids and Powers Booth is the pilot that lands in the film and kind of helps them take down the bad guys. Blow communism away. It’s a really good, young cast. I’ll be the old guy in it, which is cool.”

When the remake of the ’80s cult favorite “Red Dawn” hits the big screen next year, local residents will see some familiar sights since actors and film crews descended on the community to film scenes for it this week.

Film crews have been out at the old Notre Dame High School, making use of the football field and parking lot. They were planning to be there specifically through Friday, but, in general, they’re in Michigan through early December in communities including Detroit, Troy, Mount Clemens and Pontiac, said publicist Peter Silbermann.

“It was a perfect location,” he said of the Harper Woods spot. “We needed a football field, and it’s a big one and it works perfectly for this production,” he said.

“It’s going to be a fabulous action thriller and we’re thrilled to be here in Michigan,” Silbermann said.

Some of the cast members in this remake include Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas and Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s adopted son Connor Cruise.

4 Daybreakers reviews

Exclaim.com:
Initially, the glossy sheen, clever anti-capitalist subtext, gorgeous storyboarding and stellar art direction mask the many faults of Daybreakers, with dry exposition hiding behind top-notch set designs and tightly assembled action sequences. After awhile, however, we begin to tire of the bland, humourless characters and the piecemeal story patching together what is essentially a series of vampire-related, science fiction ideas and prospects without focus.

There is a message, sure, and a heavy-handed one at that, but it’s difficult to care with nothing but wooden archetypes blurting out prosaic babble without subtlety or nuance.

Set in 2019, this political fable features a society loaded with vampires, and a dwindling human populace farmed for blood and hunted like animals. The problem with this is that without food, vampires mutate and regress to an animalistic, bat-like stage, killing anything in their path, which proves problematic in the face of social order.

The Japanese town made infamous by the movie The Cove has temporarily suspended its hunt. The annual Taiji hunt claims around 2,000 dolphins, killed by hand after being herded into a shallow cove.

The Japanese town chronicled in the award-winning film “The Cove” for its annual dolphin hunt that turns coastal waters red with blood has suspended killing the animals, at least for this week’s catch, following an international outcry.

The western Japanese town of Taiji (TAH-ee-jee) will sell some of the dolphins to aquariums as it does every year, but the remainder of the 100 bottlenose dolphins that were caught early on Wednesday in the first catch of the season will be released.

Traditionally, theyre captured and most are then killed and sold for meat.

While Japan officially declares that the move had nothing to do with the protests, an official at the Taiji fisheries association, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday that the decision was made partly in response to the international outcry created by “The Cove.”

SOUNDBITE (English) Ric O’Barry, Earth Island Institute and Lead Character, “The Cove”: “Well it seems as though the town of Taiji is responding to the world community, asking that this dolphin slaughter stop and today they implemented a no-dolphin-slaughter policy, so that is cause for great celebration. Not only for dolphins and whales but for Japanese people who are being contaminated by this product.” Dolphin meat is consumed as a delicacy in Japan, and hunts date back thousands of years. Meat from one dolphin fetches about $500 US dollars but dolphins can be sold to aquariums for 10 to 20 times that price, with some kinds going for as much as 150-thousand US dollars.

Under the International Whaling Commissions ban on whaling, hunting for dolphins and small whales is still permitted, but draws sharp criticism from activists around the world.
